CUTTING CENTER
Gems are cut in cities that have forged a reputation for their skill in this field. Traditionally, diamonds are cut in Antwerp and Tel-Aviv, to which can be added New York (specializing in large stones) and Bombay (for small stones).
For colored stones, all the producer-countries operate their own cutting workshops (Brazil, Madagascar, Vietnam).
Other centers enjoy an international reputation, however: Bogota (Colombia) and Jaipur (India) for emeralds, Bangkok (Thailand) and Sri Lanka for rubies and sapphires, and Idar-Oberstein (Germany) for other colored stones.
