We are all surrounded by magnetic fields.
The degree of intensity of these fields varies depending on our environment. If they are especially strong, they can influence the movement of a watch; they can penetrate it and significantly modify its functioning. For a quartz watch, a high magnetic field can slow it down a few seconds. However, away from the magnetic field, the watch will start to work normally again. For a mechanical watch, magnetization can disrupt the watch’s timing element, make the hair spring of the movement stick and the performance of the watch change. It is therefore recommended to avoid magnetic fields or neutralize them.
How ?
It is difficult to avoid them as they are impossible to see. It is, however, important to know that their main sources are magnets, speakers, telephones, and magnetic closures of refrigerators, cupboards and handbags.
For mechanical watches, if you want to know if your watch is magnetic, just set it next to a compass to see if the hands spin. If they do, your watch is magnetic. We recommend that you take it to a Cartier boutique where it will be put in an inverse magnetic field in order to restore its normal functioning.
